I don’t know about you, but I personally hate overhead lighting. I much prefer the softer, moody ‘chiaroscuro’ effect of casting light and shadows via lamps dotted around the room from differing heights and, especially, from lights attached to walls. I find this adds so much more interesting warmth and intimacy to a room than harsh, overhead lighting, as it softens everything around you and makes you and your guests feel more welcome, cosy and relaxed.
